Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the U.S. She's been a media critic since 1995. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. It hosts video clips featuring commentary and analysis of the depictions of women in the media and popular culture of today. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic that has received prizes for her work, is a feminist blogger. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in the popular culture. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is the main goals of her work. But, she also discusses issues of specific harassment of women on the internet and for other groups that are left out. Sarkeesian has a degree in the fields of social thought and political science at York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while she was still at University. An ambitious woman who wanted to start a web-series examining the representation of gender in video games was targeted in an online campaign. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered the determination of an activist for women in media. Her notable contributions to the field of feminists have been recognized by numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit explores the portrayals of women in popular culture of today.
